The book's last line contains a punch that just might make readers pause and think for a moment before hurrying onward or maybe even cause them to stop for longer. But Elmer's cousin Wilbur shares his same penchant for close observation, and they spend some time gazing up at the night sky. For the others, clearly there is no time to slow down and notice what's around them. But when he points out these natural wonders, the other animals just rush past him because they have places to go and things to do or they make fun of him. In every scene in this picture book, originally published in Great Britain, Elmer is captivated by flowers, an unusually shaped log, a waterfall, even a rock formation. No, Elmer has the inclination to stop and smell the roses. But it isn't just those colors that make him different from the others. Elmer is depicted as a bit different from the other elephants as he is covered in patchwork colors. I liked the gentle way this story is told, and I'm certain many readers, whether they be young or old, will be able to relate to its message and to Elmer's plight. ![]()
