Throughout the novel best friends Verity (Queenie) and Kittyhawk (Maddie) battle their own set of challenges while Wein uses Queenie's predicament and her confessions to describe how the two meet. But what really brings this book alive is the character development. "I am a coward." A brilliant beginning accompanies an intriguing plot with a side of visualized descriptions. And, indeed, from the first line the book shot me off on an adventure into Nazi-Occupied France and the tiny island of Great Britain. It was the mystery, the compelling image of danger and determination that came to mind, and how this book looked like it encompassed all three. The hands tied together, touching each other's wrists, the name "Verity" in red, and the writing near the spine of the book all caught my eye. You know that saying, "don't judge a book by its cover?" I admit that on first glance at Elizabeth Wein's Code Name Verity, I did exactly that.
