She worked as a professional dog trainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full time. Join Meghan, Ash, Puck, Grimalkin, and the entire Iron Fey cast for this final. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. The gory tales faded with time (okay, at least the illustrations did), but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a real job. This is a companion series to the Iron Fey series. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten is a book series for ages 14+ by Julie Kagawa. When not swimming for her life, Julie immersed herself in books, often to the chagrin of her schoolteachers, who would find she hid novels behind her Math textbooks during class. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Discworld 13![]() ![]() In 2008, Harper Children's published Terry's standalone non-Discworld YA novel, Nation. Born Terence David John Pratchett, Sir Terry Pratchett sold his first story when he was thirteen, which earned him enough money to buy a second-hand typewriter. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments I capture the castle pages![]() ![]() Cassandra has realized that she is in love with her sister's fiance, and, although she doesn't know it, the vicar understands she is troubled. The vicar is more of a friend than pastor to the family he is well-educated and one of the few people that the girls or their father know in the small village. But this little story, written from the point of view of the younger sister by way of her journal, captures more than just the castle as young Cassandra discovers life and love and the wide world beyond genteel poverty.Īlthough Smith's story is not meant to be challenging, I like a small section where Cassandra talks to the local vicar about religion. The story is quite simple with shades of Jane Austen two poor girls with no prospects live with their eccentric parents in a rundown ruin of an English castle then the rich neighbors move in and life is changed forever. ![]() This book, a discovery by my aunt in Connecticut, is such a charming work that I can't understand why I never read it before. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Gordon korman i want to go home![]() ![]() ![]() He often injected comedy into his story lines, as with the Nose Pickers series. We belonged to a sect known as the Church of 'Will you do it?' I tried not to sound as desperate as I felt. 'Carolyn,' he said, 'I'll do everything I can, but even if I leave right now, the soonest I can be there is five in the morning.' He lived 300 miles away and would have to drive through the night. The choice was freedom or a life of fear. ![]() The two things that had to happen before I could escape were in place: my husband had gone away on a business trip and my eight children were all at home. Now the time was right and I could not afford to fail. I had been watching and waiting for months. Elora is dumped into another world, one where knights risk their lives to kill vampires (bad ones) and it's populated with elves, humans, fae, werewolves, and a variety of other rare and unusual beings with the occasional demon and angel hanging around. a model for what many writers about women should strive for, vs some of the whiny weak characters in other series (grrrr). The main character, Elora, is smart, strong, resilient (and beautiful). ![]() Great characters, which are more fully developed in later books in the series, and minimal whining. There are at least 12 books in this series, and probably about 3-5 off shoot books, all of which are worth a read or listen. One of Danann's talents, and something I really love in my books) is the appearance of characters from previous books in later related series. But this book is the foundation for my love for the Black Swan world and all the related books which follow. My Familiar Stranger is a full length, stand alone, Paranormal Romance novel that also sets up the foundation for the Black Swan series. Victoria Danann is an awesome author and I'm in the process of trying to read/listen to every one of her books (several series, but especially Witches of Wimberly, & Sanctuary Motorcycle club set in Austin). ![]() One of the FB Reader's groups I belong to recommended this book (whoever you are, thanks so very much). ![]() ![]() She soon discovers that beyond her sheltered view lies a world full of shadowy secrets and disturbing violence.Īs Gretchen's investigations lead her to question the motives and loyalties of her dearest friends and her closest family, she must determine her own allegiances-even if her choices could get her and Daniel killed.
